How to Stand Up to the Boss (And Not Get Fired) - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How to Stand Up to the Boss (And Not Get Fired) - Introvert Whisperer How to Stand Up to the Boss (And Not Get Fired) As things go, one of the more difficult things to do is to confront or push back on the boss. A lot of people wonât do it because they fear it would cause them to get fired or minimally get on the bad side of the Boss. While itâs an understandable concern, its also unfounded. Your brain is making up false assumptions appearing as real (F.E.A.R.). Unless you know without a doubt that your boss is too sensitive for well-executed confrontation, you need to add this to your toolkit. Letâs first look at reasons why Standing Up to the Boss, can be a good skill: a) The Boss isnât always right No one is ever 100% right all the time. On those occasions when the Boss is about ready to drive you or others over the metaphorical cliff, you are obligated to say something. b) Self-respect You teach people how to treat you and if you allow the Boss (or anyone) to trample on your values, you are teaching them to disrespect you. Also, they will respect you for standing up for yourself. c) Unaware You canât assume the Boss knows all the facts or factors impacted by a decision. The Boss may make a decision that has consequences that they simply donât know or understand. The world is so complex these days that you can never fully grasp all of the implications of some decisions. Do the Boss a favor and let them know. d) Not a mind reader If you were somehow ignored, disregarded or otherwise personally impacted by something the Boss did: you might be upset and they may be completely clueless. This is not the time for passive-aggressive comments. Those are unhelpful and often more offensive than coming right out and airing your grievance. Also, many people are very unaware that their behavior might be taken negatively so you will be helping the Boss to develop greater insight into their own actions. Letâs look at things you can do to confront the Boss and keep your job: i) Keep it private One of the reasons why anyone including the Boss will think youâre a jerk is to air your concerns in public. Always take any confrontation into a private setting. It will be safer for you both to fully explore whatever concerns you have if they arenât trying to âsave-faceâ. ii) Keep it unemotional Being emotional when you confront them will only set up the situation to go poorly. All humans have an innate tendency to mirror the person they are with. If you approach them in a red-faced rant, you will be met with the same or worse. Do your confronting when you can be level headed. iii) Donât make it personal Donât do or say anything that disparages the Boss. Focus totally on whatever the issue is and leave personality out of it. Also, donât make the assumption that whatever your issue is was done specifically to negatively impact you. Even if a decision did negatively impact you, the decision was made for different reasons. iv) Focus on the issue Approach the Boss as if you are there to solve a problem. If you focus on problem-solving, you will greatly avoid the Boss getting offended. v) Be specific You must present the issue in very specific terms. If you are too general or vague, you have nothing to solve and cause more confusion that you intend. vi) Talk about impact If there is a problem that impacts you or the business, make sure to outline what the impact is to whatever problem you bring to them. vii) Stay upbeat It helps to take a positive view of working with the boss to create a solution. viii) Accountability Make sure that when you have reached solutions that you build in follow-up to keep you both accountable to each other in the process. ix) Pick your timing and your battles Just like with anything else you know timing can be everything. Donât do something like confronting the Boss when they are ready to head out the door or in the middle of a crisis. Also, keep in mind that not all issues are worthy of the confrontation compared to other issues you do want resolution on. x) Make the Boss your partner. Take the perspective that you are both there to get the work done and enjoy it at the same time. If you can develop this skillset, you will be well regarded by every Boss you will have. College Admissions The Early App
College Admissions The Early App ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog If you're a college senior or junior, then you probably know that many colleges offer an early application option. There are two main types of early options: early action and early decision. The deadlines for these applications are usually in late October or early November, so now if you are a senior in college now is the time to make the move! For juniors or underclassmen, keep this in mind for the future. The difference between early action and early decision is the degree of commitment that they require. An early action application will let you hear back early from the school that you send it to, and if you are accepted you will have the choice to attend or not. An early decision application will also let you hear back early, but if you are accepted by the school that you send it to, then you are required to attend that school. It's almost definitely a good idea to send in one or two early action applications as long as you have your application materials, such as your essay and recommendation letters, almost ready to go. Deciding whether to complete any early decision applications is harder, even though you can only do one, because it means choosing one school that you know you prefer above all others. If there is a school that is your clear favorite, that you have done all your research on and visited if possible, then you should go ahead with the early decision application. The early decision application shows the university you send it to that you are very interested in attending, which is something that they value. In general, acceptance rates are much higher from the early decision application pool than from the general application pool. So, if your top choice is also a bit of a reach school, an early decision application can give you a leg up. A few things to remember if you decide to complete an early application: 1. You will probably be asked to submit your grades for the first quarter of your senior year. You need to make sure those grades are what you want them to be before you make your early application. If you need time to pull your grades up, wait for the regular deadline to apply. 2. You won't find out the results until mid-December. Most regular college admissions deadlines are only shortly after that (typically around January 1st) and you will have the holiday season coming up, so you should still move ahead with your other applications while you're waiting to hear. 3. There's another option: rolling admissions. There are some schools, usually large state universities, that don't have an early deadline or a regular deadline. Instead, they accept applications from October through February or March, and decide on people as they get their applications. If you apply on the early end of the rolling range, you have a better chance of being accepted.

New Oxford Vice-Chancellor proposes US-style scholarship system
New Oxford Vice-Chancellor proposes US-style scholarship system In his first interview as the soon-to-be Oxford University Vice-Chancellor, Andrew Hamilton has outlined his desire for a US-style scholarship system to encourage gifted, financially strapped students to apply to the top universities. This is a bold move for someone who has yet to be installed in his post and is the latest spearhead in an on-going campaign to break the elitist perception of Oxford. Hamilton intends to campaign for a university funding system based on the US model, where majority or full scholarships are readily available to the poorest students. He described the current UK system as 'needs-blind', with even the most generous bursaries failing to meet student requirements. On a wider scale, Hamilton also remarked that any move to raise the current tuition fee cap (3,225) would have to be matched by a major expansion of financial support for students. However, Hamilton, formerly Provost of Yale, is not without his critics. The trend amongst Vice-Chancellors at the moment is to raise tuition fees at the next review, many of whom feel their institutions are not otherwise sustainable, rather than maintain the cap and expand support. When it comes to the US question, there is also a fear that introducing American-style scholarships will result in American-style university fees, which can be up to 31,000 a year. It is early days - and even Hamilton has said he can't do anything until he has settled into the post. Still, it will be interesting to see if his appointment can affect the way all universities approach fee structures in the UK.

Online Tutoring - Why You Should Take Advantage Of It
Online Tutoring - Why You Should Take Advantage Of ItOnline tutoring is something which has become quite popular as more people are finding themselves without the ability to go into school. The reason for this is that they do not have a practical need to go to school and do not have any other options. Online tutoring however, offers many benefits. In many ways this is a perfect way to prepare a student's education. This can be of particular benefit for students who cannot afford to attend college or university. For these students there are advantages in being able to be tutored online. The most obvious is that it provides the student with the opportunity to have their learning done for them at their own pace.In addition to this, there are many advantages for a student to be able to have a tutor while they are at home. One of the best advantages is that a student will not need to share a classroom with other students who are just a few years behind them. Therefore it is easier for a st udent to focus on their studies, especially as they get older. However, there is a certain level of social awkwardness that arises when a student is being taught by a stranger, especially if they have never met before. This is not something that should worry them however, because they will most likely get used to it over time. When a student is looking for a tutor, there are many things which they should take into consideration. One of the biggest issues is that the person who is teaching the student will need to have a good reputation as far as teaching and tutoring goes.Furthermore, there will be different standards in the way that they are expected to do their work. The teacher will need to be able to explain in detail what he or she is doing and will also need to be able to do it in a way that is easy to understand. It is important for this reason that they are able to demonstrate what they are trying to teach the student. It is a good idea for a student to see what different place s offer to help with this aspect of their education. This can be done by looking online and asking questions. It is also possible to ask people they know whether they have ever used any tutors and if they were able to get anything out of them.

Advantages of Afterschool Tutoring Programs
Advantages of Afterschool Tutoring ProgramsIf you have a child in your class that is struggling to learn math, a great alternative to paying tuition fees is to consider using afterschool tutoring programs. Although there are many different types of tutoring programs available, the three most common types are academic or cultural, books and homework. Although you may not want to use a tutor as a means of supplementing your child's education, these programs can actually do more than simply enhance your child's learning.By allowing your child to take on new skills and strategies through tutoring, you will be showing him that he is capable of doing his own work. Additionally, having a more structured environment is a beneficial way to improve a child's learning experience.A big benefit of working with an afterschool program is that it allows for interaction with teachers. Teachers tend to be more lax with their students in the traditional classroom setting. Since a tutor works in a more private environment, this often sparks an increased level of interaction with the teacher and his/her other students. By having an opportunity to interact with your child's teacher, the student is able to ask questions and receive guidance in a more structured environment.Afterschool tutoring also provides a social outlet for children who struggle with the social aspect of their education. Having a structured environment offers a structured way for children to spend their free time with friends. In the same vein, having a tutor allows your child to work independently and learns to perform their own work.Afterschool tutoring programs are more likely to have shorter tutoring sessions, especially if they are used to augment existing school instruction. These programs tend to give a clearer focus on the actual subject matter. While this is certainly not the only benefit of working with after school tutoring programs, it certainly is a beneficial one.Afterschool tutoring is also ideal fo r parents who have trouble keeping track of their child's homework or simply want to supplement their child's lessons. If your child has any kind of learning disability, this type of program can be beneficial. Having an extra set of eyes to help you keep track of the child's progress can help you as well.Whether your child's needs fall into the academic or cultural category, finding a program to fit your child's learning style is important. Afterschool tutoring programs can allow your child to learn and succeed without having to spend money on expensive tuition fees. This can result in a much more rewarding experience for your child and his or her educational future.
